Welcome one and all to the first blog post of Women In Business in HKUST! We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce our society and what it means for us to be part of this journey. WiB at HKUST was created with the mission of empowering women to become leaders in the business world of today. With 54% of undergraduate students in the HKUST Business School identifying as female as of 2019, we wanted to take this unique opportunity to optimize resources for our fellow female students in their strive for excellence.
Our Vision
HKUST holds a unique position in the world of tertiary education. In 2020, it earned the title of one of the top 20 gender-balanced business schools on the Gender Balance Scorecard, a ranking created by the gender balance consultancy firm 20-first. With a 7% leap in female student intake in the MBA program in the previous year, HKUST surpassed other leading institutions such as Harvard Business School and the Yale School of Management. However, we see an opportunity to further encourage female students to pursue success in their respective fields and perhaps to balance the ratio even further.
We’d also like to help students unlock their talent and reach their highest potential in leadership. We understand that at times, the lack of representation in industries with significant gender gaps may seem intimidating for those who would like to be a part of it. This blog, like the rest of the society, aims to foster a sense of community and empowerment where individuals, regardless of any background, feel safe and seen in their pursuit of professional excellence.
Plans for the Future
Over the coming months, this blog will be rolling out content in conjunction with other initiatives created by Women In Business. So far we plan to have helpful guides and resources on different topics related to business, discussions on challenges women face in the field, interviews with leading female professionals in a variety of industries, and a monthly invitation for reader contribution.
We’ll also be hosting virtual events such as workshops, a game night, and panel discussions in our first edition of initiatives. During these events we’ll take a deep dive into topics such as building your professional resume, tips on managing interviews, and navigating different struggles in the workplace.
Thanks for reading our first post! If you have any comments and suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know. This blog is as much as it is yours as it is ours. We would love to hear back from you, and hope you’re just as excited as we are.
