Have you ever been rejected from a position, or role even though you were just as qualified as your male opponent? Or perhaps, you felt like asking for a promotion, but were reluctant because it felt ‘unusual’ or ‘unwelcomed’?
Chances are you experienced a subliminal phenomenon of the ‘glass ceiling’. This is an invisible barrier, a misogynistic attitude in society that prevents women from rising to higher jobs, or even as simple as not being able to get the same opportunities that men get.
Here are three easy steps for you to tackle this issue, one step at a time.
Recognize that it exists: the first step towards changing any pattern is simply being aware that it is happening. If you notice that the company you work at has this organizational culture, ask yourself if this is where you want to keep working.
For instance, look out for these terms:
Less woman in the higher authority
‘That's just the way things work here’ without any explanation
Excusing inappropriate comments as ‘banter’.
Fast-track career programs are in place for minority groups, but few participants progress.
As an employee: Don't internalize it and exert your frustration on the wrong people. Use your anger for good use, raise concerns, and seek professional advice from people at higher positions that are willing to help.
Be patient, but assertive: change is inevitable, and the glass ceiling will break but it takes time and continuous effort. Check in regularly with your manager to see what progress is being made. Don't allow those at the top to "park" or forget the issue.
