Mindfulness: Navigating University with Purpose

With the whirlwind of classes, assignments and social events at university, practicing mindfulness has been like a secret weapon to finding balance in my life. It helps me optimize my time, reduce stress and savor the moments of rest and relaxation. I'll be sharing a few of my tips for navigating the next semester, and making the most of our time at UST.

  1. Mindful studying: Instead of the chaos that comes with multitasking, embrace mindful studying- an hour or two a day where there's no distractions and complete focus. This is a great way to get assignments and homework out of the way, and it helps to schedule your day, so there's no last-minute cramming. The Pomodoro Technique, and body doubling are some of my favorite methods of focusing. Here's a helpful pomodoro video to optimize your productivity:

  2. Digital Detox: Constant connectivity can take a toll on mental well-being, and it often leads to a rut in productivity. Consider a digital detox during specific times, such as before bedtime or during meals. Disconnecting from screens allows you to fully relax and turn off doom-scrolling, constant message alerts, and most importantly- canvas notifications!

  3. Nature Connection: Take advantage of green spaces on and around our campus. Spend time in nature, whether it's a simple walk by seaside, exploring the routes around campus, or a walk down to the beach nearby. This provides a refreshing perspective and a break from the academic routine.

  4. Figuring out a regular sleep routine: We're not all 5am risers, and it's important to find the routine that best works for you- whether that's an early morning gym session or a late night working, consistency is key when it comes to getting your sleep right. As an added bonus, a regular routine sets you up for those occasional all nighters during midterm season.

  5. Second Brain: Utilizing a second brain digitally streamlines life organization, offering a personalized hub for thoughts, tasks, and ideas. My favorite apps are Notion and Obsidian, which helps with efficient management of tasks and frees up mental space for other things, so you don't have to rely on memory alone!

In addition to the above, regular exercise and social interactions have really kept me going during the semesters at UST. As we navigate the upcoming semester, I hope these insights and tips contribute to a fulfilling and successful academic journey. Cheers to a productive and fulfilling 2024!
