The Impact of COVID-19 on Women

The pandemic has affected everyone in different aspects. From global statistics, it can be stated that compared to the past two years, the current situation seems to be improving. However, before accepting the 'new normal', we should consider how Women from different backgrounds have been affected.

The Economic effects

"Worldwide, 740 million women work in the informal economy, and during the first month of the pandemic their income fell by 60%."

Women were more likely to encounter unemployment during the pandemic. Overall, this impacted their livelihoods. Many women work for their families under low wages and dangerous working conditions.

The Provision of Basic Human Rights

"Globally, 13 million more child marriages are projected to take place by 2030 due to school closures and to increased poverty resulting from the pandemic."

The pandemic has reduced access to basic healthcare and education. Consequentially, many young women in developing countries face greater chances of early marriage. This prevents access to further education and provision of basic rights while posing a greater risk of violence and abuse from their partners.

The Increase in Domestic Workload and Violence

"According to an Oxfam survey across five countries, 43% of women said they felt more anxious, depressed or ill because of the increased unpaid care and domestic workload."

Women play a significant role in the health and social care workforce. These positions are significantly important during the pandemic but have been greatly undervalued and poorly paid. The pandemic has also posed a heavier burden on single mothers, women in poverty, and racially and ethnically discriminated groups. There was an estimated increase of 33% in intimate partner violence. As the pandemic disrupted the provision of social services, many women feel hopeless when encountering domestic violence.

How can we make a difference?

The first step to taking action is awareness- which comes from knowledge. Being aware of your basic human rights as well as sharing this knowledge to increase awareness is crucial towards making a change. Be aware of any prejudices you may have and how this may impact your attitudes or behaviours towards certain people. Lastly, don't be afraid to speak up and reach out for support.
