Following an event-packed January, February flew by as we got busy with the start of the new semester. Without further ado, here are some of the biggest events that happened over the past four weeks.
Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout
Starting off with something that’s been on all our minds for the past year, the Covid-19 vaccine is finally available in Hong Kong (hooray!). The Hong Kong government has approved of three vaccines, all requiring two doses:
The Sinovac Biotech,
The Pfizer-BioNTech, and
The AstraZeneca (which is expected to arrive in the second half of 2021).
Currently, five groups of people have priority:
People aged 60 or above, and a maximum of two carers for people aged 70 or above,
Healthcare workers,
Residents and staff in care homes for the elderly or people with disabilities,
Workers in critical public services, and
Workers engaged in cross-border work.

Winter Storm Uri
Winter and ice storm Uri struck North America from February 13th to February 17th, causing blackouts across the US and Mexico. Texas, one of the states that was hit the hardest, experienced power outages across the region, with temperatures reaching -15 F/-26 C. Here are some shocking photos that show the aftermath. All I can say is, I’ve never been more grateful for Hong Kong’s weather.
Plenty of Updates from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
On Valentine’s Day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, confirmed that they are expecting their Covsecond child. This announcement was a tribute to Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, who had shared that she was pregnant with Prince Harry exactly 37 years ago. On February 19th, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Harry and Meghan were officially breaking away from the family and would not be returning as working royals.
Golden Globe Nominations
On a more lighthearted note, the nominations for the 78th Golden Globe awards came out on February 3rd. Check out the list of nominees/winners here and see if you can find any of your faves! Besides being postponed by more than two months, the ceremony was hosted earlier today in a virtual manner by the iconic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler from New York City and Los Angeles respectively due to implications from the pandemic.
The Buccaneers win the Super Bowl
For those of you interested in American football, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 for their second title, with quarterback Tom Brady named as the MVP. Fun fact: Sarah Thomas became the first female NFL official to officiate a Super Bowl!
Of course, one of the unmissable aspects of the Super Bowl was, as always, the commercials. Here’s one by Oatly. Is it the best commercial ever? The worst? You decide!
