In case you didn’t know, today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day! It is a day celebrating both the struggles and achievements of women all over the world, but more importantly, it is also a call of action as we raise awareness and rally for gender parity.
This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Choose To Challenge’ and the hashtags to celebrate it are #ChooseToChallenge and #IWD2021.
Did you know? International Women’s Day can be traced back to 1909 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding for shorter hours, better pay, and voting rights. In 1911, International Women’s Day was honored across Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with more than a million women participating in demonstrations. It then became officially recognized by the United Nations in 1967.
More than a century later, there is much to celebrate, but also much room for improvement. Women all over the world are still fighting for various rights, whether it is reproductive rights, education, or equality in the workplace.
It is important for us to have representation reflecting women of diverse cultural, social, economic and political situations. This day belongs to women everywhere! We should all play our part in paving the way for the future as we create meaningful change and move towards gender equality. To everyone out there, no matter where you are or who you are, we wish you a Happy Women’s Day!
