3 Tips to Stay Motivated When Working From Home

Your A-Z guide is part of an ongoing column for the WiB blog where we offer some tips and advice as you navigate your way through career and life.

Our third blog of this month is your first A-Z Guide, where we would like to look into something that is really relevant to all of us at this current stage, working from home. Even though social distancing measures are relaxing, working from home may be here to stay as employers and employees realize the benefits it entails.

So, let’s take a look at some of the tips to stay motivated when you’re working out of a home office.

1. Organize and plan out your day

The first tip is to organize and plan out your day like you would when you are in office. When you are working from home, it requires self-discipline in order to maintain your focus throughout the day in order to perform the work that you are assigned to without any supervision.

Therefore, by making a detailed schedule with the tasks, you will have greater motivation to stick to the plan. At the end of the day, when you have completed all the milestones you need to achieve, the sense of achievement will definitely be a great motivation to drive you forward!

2. Build a workout routine

One of the major benefits of working from home is definitely the flexibility in terms of organizing your work schedule. This also makes it the perfect opportunity to take some time to invest in your physical wellbeing by building a regular workout routine, especially with all the time saved from commuting.

There are a lot of online resources to get you started with a simple, yet effective workout routine at home. All you need is often a simple mat and you can have access to yoga classes to unwind your mind or HIIT classes if you’re looking to burn some calories.

3. Schedule catch-ups with your colleagues

The major drawbacks of working from home are undeniably the lack of social interaction where you can no longer have “chance encounters” with your colleagues for a quick coffee chat or catch up. With working from home in place, the meetings you have with your colleagues are often timed with a clear purpose, hence leading you to feel isolated.

Therefore, it is also crucial to set some time aside for team gatherings, just like how you would in a normal office setting, to strengthen the sense of belonging to the team despite in a remote setting. Some ways to spice up the virtual “Happy Hour” include naming the meeting room as the name of the bar that the team always visits, where participants can also set their virtual background as a corner of their pub. This can make a great starting point for the conversation as a way to catch up with your colleagues.
